Windows 11 System Settings for Beginners: Easily Customize Your PC (Sound, Display, and More!)

Hi guys, this is Darren from Darren’s Tech Tutorials!

If you’re new to Windows 11—or perhaps moving over from an older version—navigating the new system settings might feel a little intimidating. But don’t worry! In our ongoing series dedicated to Windows 11 for beginners and seniors, we’re going to show you exactly how easy it is to take control and customize your PC.

By the end of this guide, you’ll know how to adjust everything from your display brightness and sound volume to key accessibility features and regional settings. Let’s dive in and master those Windows 11 system settings!

The First Step: Finding Your Control Panel

The settings menu is your central hub for all things customization and configuration. Accessing it is incredibly simple on Windows 11:

Navigate down to the Search icon on your Taskbar (it looks like a magnifying glass).

Step 2: Type “Settings”

Start typing the word settings. As soon as you type the first few letters (often just “S-E”), you will see System Settings appear in the search results.

Step 3: Click and Open

Click on System Settings. This will launch the main window, giving you access to all available configuration options, neatly organized in a menu on the left-hand side.

Deep Dive into Core System Settings

Once you are in the Settings menu, you’ll see a long list of categories. Let’s walk through the most important ones and what you can achieve in each section.

1. System: The Starting Point

When you open Settings, you default to the System tab. This is your home base and contains critical options like:

  • Display: Adjust your screen brightness, resolution, and scale your text size if things look too small.
  • Sound: If your speakers seem too quiet, or you want to check your microphone levels before a video call, this is where you go. You can increase or decrease the system volume easily.
  • Storage: See how much space you have left on your computer.
  • Activation & Troubleshooting: Helpful if you are having issues and need to diagnose a problem.
  • About: Wondering how much RAM or what processor your PC has? Click “About” to view your system specifications.

2. Bluetooth & Devices

Want to connect those new wireless speakers, pair a Bluetooth mouse, or set up a printer?

  • Click on Bluetooth & Devices to manage all your external hardware connections.
  • You can easily add a new device or check the status of connected printers and scanners.

3. Network & Internet

This section allows you to manage everything related to staying connected:

  • Check your Wi-Fi or wired connection status.
  • Monitor your data usage if you have a limited internet plan.

4. Personalization

This is the fun section where you make Windows 11 truly yours!

  • Background: Change your desktop wallpaper. If you want to put a picture of your family or pet as your background, you can do it right here.
  • Colors & Themes: Adjust the color scheme of your operating system to match your preferred look.

5. Accounts

If you share your computer, or just need to manage your own profile:

  • The Accounts section allows you to manage user profiles, change passwords, and add new users to the PC.

6. Time & Language (Crucial for Region Settings)

It’s very important that your computer knows what time zone you’re in. If you noticed your clock or local settings are incorrect:

  • Go to Time & Language.
  • You can adjust your time zone, and crucially, your regional settings. For example, if your region defaults to the wrong country, you can easily select the correct option (like changing from Dublin to Ireland, as we showed in the video!).

7. Accessibility

This is a fantastic feature set designed to make your PC easier to use, especially if you have vision or mobility concerns.

  • Under Accessibility, you can adjust things like Visual Effects.
  • We highly recommend trying to make the mouse clicker bigger or increasing the font size to ensure text on your screen is comfortable to read.

8. Windows Update

Keeping your system updated is vital for security and stability.

  • Click on Windows Update to check for new security patches and features.
  • If updates are available, you can initiate the install right from this screen (just like we did in the tutorial!).

Conclusion: Take Control of Windows 11

That’s it! You now have a comprehensive overview of how to navigate and change the most important system settings in Windows 11. Whether you need to turn up the volume, make the screen easier to read, or just connect a new device, the Settings menu is your first point of call.

We encourage you to open up the Settings menu on your own PC and start exploring. Customizing your operating system makes the experience so much better!
