Super Easy Guide: How to Install Google Chrome on macOS in Minutes!
Welcome back to Darren’s Tech Tutorials!
If you’ve just set up a new Mac or are tired of using Safari as your primary browser, you’re in the right place. Google Chrome remains one of the fastest, most popular, and most feature-rich web browsers available today. Whether you need seamless syncing with your other Google accounts or simply prefer Chrome’s development tools, getting it installed on macOS is surprisingly quick.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through the simple, two-step process—downloading the installer and completing the installation—so you can get back to browsing the web in no time!
Step 1: Downloading the Google Chrome Installer
Before we can install the browser, we need to download the official macOS installer file. For security and stability, always download Chrome directly from Google’s official site.
- Open Safari (or your current default browser): Locate the Safari app in your Dock or Applications folder and launch it.
- Navigate to the Official Chrome Download Page: In the address bar, type
google.com/chromeand hit Enter. - Initiate the Download: You will see a large blue or colorful button labeled “Download Chrome.” Click this button. The site should automatically detect that you are using a Mac and present you with the correct installation package.
- Note: You may be prompted to accept the Terms of Service. Review them and click “Accept and Install.”
- Confirm the File: The download process will begin, and a file named something like
googlechrome.dmgwill be saved to your Mac’s Downloads folder (or wherever you designated your downloads to go). This DMG file is the disk image containing the installation software.
Step 2: Installing Chrome onto Your macOS System
Once the .dmg file is safely downloaded, the installation process on a Mac is handled primarily through a simple drag-and-drop action.
2.1 Mount the Disk Image
- Locate the Downloaded File: Go to your Downloads folder, or click the download indicator in your browser.
- Double-Click the DMG File: Find the
googlechrome.dmgfile and double-click it. - Wait for Verification: macOS will verify the file and then “mount” the disk image, which means a new window will pop up showing the installation contents, usually displaying two icons: the Google Chrome application icon and an alias to your Applications folder.
2.2 Drag and Drop the Application
- Drag the Chrome Icon: Click and hold the Google Chrome application icon.
- Drop into Applications: Drag the icon directly over the Applications folder alias shown in the same window. Release the mouse button.
- Pro Tip: Dragging the icon into the Applications folder copies the application file to your main macOS applications library, making it accessible system-wide.
- Wait for the Copy to Complete: macOS will quickly copy the necessary files.
Step 3: Finishing Up and Launching Chrome
Congratulations! Google Chrome is now installed on your system. We just have a couple of quick cleanup steps before you can start browsing.
- Eject the Disk Image: Look for the mounted disk image on your desktop or in the Finder sidebar (it will likely be named “Google Chrome”). Right-click it and select “Eject [Google Chrome],” or drag the icon to the Trash (which acts as the Eject button for mounted disks). This keeps your desktop clean.
- Launch Google Chrome:
- Open your Applications folder (or use Launchpad).
- Find the new Google Chrome app icon and double-click it.
- Handle the Security Warning: The first time you launch any application downloaded from the internet, macOS will show a security pop-up asking, “Are you sure you want to open this application?” Click Open to confirm and proceed.
- Sign In: Chrome will open, allowing you to sign into your Google account to sync bookmarks, history, and passwords across all your devices.
That’s all there is to it! You are now successfully running Google Chrome on your Mac.
